San Sebastián - The Host

When booking places to stay Rob and Beth's preference is to book a private apartment. Of course who doesn't prefer having a space to themselves? However, sometimes the price limit that they’ve set for themselves doesn’t always allow for that luxury. When looking for a place in San Sebastián, the private apartments were all priced over 100 CND per night. They considered skipping the location, but it was described as "the most beautiful location in Spain" by so many travellers so they decided to look further.

While searching for private rooms Rob found a few that looked promising but quickly zeroed in on one in particular.

"Beth, all their reviews are positive. They seem to have good ratings, the price is right, and the location looks good."

Their only hesitation about the selection was that their potential hosts had a dog. It wasn’t that they have anything against dogs, although they prefer cats, it was just that the only negative experience they had while travelling was in an apartment with a host who owned a dog.

"Alright. Lets give it a go."

Beth and Burbu
Within minutes of arriving at Adela and Una's apartment, Beth knew they made a good decision. While Rob wrestled with their luggage, she chatted with Adela in the hallway while petting Burbu their black and while spotted cocker spaniel. Adela explained that, although Burbu looked like a puppy, she was actually three years old and that they've only had her for six months. She explained how Burbu (which is a short form of 'bubble' in Spanish) was left neglected and abandoned in a building before they rescued her. When they adopted her she was skin and bones, had bald spots, was covered in fleas, and one eye was swollen shut with infection. As she described it both Adela and Beth’s eyes welled up thinking of how people can be so cruel to the helpless.

"Yes." thought Beth "Rob picked the right spot."

Hosts and Guests
Over the next few days of their stay, Rob and Beth found that they had a lot in common with their hosts despite the fact that they realized they were, indeed, old enough to be Adele’s and Una’s parents. Both couples regularly ate meat-free meals, enjoyed watching ‘The Walking Dead’ to which both couples formulated an eventual apocalypse survival plan (likely as a result of watching TWD),  and they both loved to travel and meet new people.

Burbu
One evening as Rob and Beth were cooking while Adela studied for her courses in the next room, Adela poked her head in the kitchen and announced "I love ‘The Big Bang Theory’ also." in response to overhearing them cooking with an episode playing in the background.

"I'm not surprised." called out Beth as Adela returned to studying.

On their final evening in San Sebastián, the Canadian travellers finally had someone to cook for! Despite the fact that both their hosts had to rise early in the morning for work and school, they stayed up late eating, drinking, chatting, and playing a little Skopa- Spanish style.

As Beth's mom insists, travelling is as much about the people you meet as it is about the culture.
